The mangrove or mud crab (like Scylla olivacea drawn here) is typically known as Alimango. Alimango is also well-known from the children’s song “Pakitong-kitong”, where children sing about an Alimango either sa suba (river), or sa dagat (coast or ocean). Which makes sense because mangroves and mangrove crabs can be found in such ecosystems.
Meanwhile Alimasag refers to “sea crabs” or salt-water swimming crabs, while Talangka refers to river crabs.
We just love crabs! Not only are they important for these ecosystems, they are important food sources for Filipinos. See an illustration of a popular Alimango dish at Filipino Food Art.
