Philippine Laughing Cicada

Some enjoy quiet Easter holidays… unless you live near a forest full of Andirit or Kuliglig!

A common noise in trees or forests in our neighborhoods are cicadas. Some say the Philippine laughing cicada, specifically Psithyristria ridibunda, sounds like it’s laughing!

In general, cicadas make these noises for different reasons including finding mates, showing distress, and more. Some make noises with different parts of their bodies, but many use a special organ called a tymbal that makes noise when vibrated.

Cicada in Pangasinanse is Andírit, while other terms are Gangis (Bisaya) and Kuliglig (Tagalog).

How do you say cicada in your forest? What do they sound like to you?
